A Fashion Post

I am making the transition from medical scrubs to corporate wear. I have to admit, though I'd much prefer corporate wear to scrubs almost any day, I have a difficult time shopping for corporate wear, mostly because I am built like a 10 year-old boy. Most clothes appropriate for the corporate world are designed for women with hips, boobs, thighs, and any other shapely women features, all of which I am lacking.

My style is a little funky and I find it difficult to purchase items that are appropriate for work, fit my child-like stature, and are also a reflection of my personal style.

Enter Forever 21...

I remember when the store first came to Minnesota and for some reason I was very unimpressed, so much to the point that I would rarely step foot inside. Not even the store's lure of fashionable items at affordable prices would entice me. I remember thinking the store was too trendy and somewhat of a cliche. Today, however, I have found it to be one of my favorite stores for corporate wear. Who would have thunk it? Forever 21 gives me options. Because the clothing is all in Juniors sizes it fits, but it also quite fashionable and funky. Problem solved! I buy nearly all of my corporate wear at Forever 21 now.

Check it out.

Below is a dress I purchased at Forever 21 just last week on sale for $10.99. I wore it to work today with the jacket, but her it is without the jacket too. Both options are paired with a wide elastic red and white polka dot belt that I purchased in Florida about 5 years ago (love that belt!).

Option 1: Modern Day Riding Habit

Option                                                         2: Puffed Sleeves

You can't tell from the picture, but my jacket is actually a tuxedo-style jacket with a tail in the back.

Which do you prefer?

Dress: Forever 21 - $10.99
Tuxedo Jacket: H&M, Thrifted via Value Thrift Store - $6
Slouch Fabric Boots: Christmas Gift from Mom-in-law
Polka Dot Belt: Store in Florida - $5
Black & White Lion Beaded Necklace: Value Thrift Store - $5
Black & White Leather Buckle Bracelet: Gift from Australia
Handbag: Mine (yes, I made it)

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://jesuis-laney.blogspot.com/2010/04/puffed-sleeves-or-modern-day-riding.html' title='Puffed Sleeves or Modern Day Riding Habit? I thought not. I had no idea until a friend of mine mentioned that she had started reading the Shopaholic series. Shocked, a bit disturbed and a little curious I plunked myself down at my laptop, logged on to half.com and purchased the first book of the series, Confessions of a Shopaholic for $0.75 ($3.75 with shipping and handling).

Before beginning the first book I couldn't even fathom how there could be a whole series on shopping! A little embarrassed about my book of choice, I began to discretely, yet faithfully read the series. I was soon pleasantly surprised.

The book took me through a few emotions as I experienced the absurdness that is Becky Bloomwood. I couldn't help but become frustrated with Becky's incredulous ideas and spending habits. But then I began to relate and see the series for all the humor that it is. I mean, is Becky really all that different from me, or really any girl for that matter?

Sophia Kinsella does an amazing job of taking something so seemingly uninteresting as an English girl who shops too much, and turn her into a vibrant character that any girl could relate to and want to befriend. I was amazed at how drawn I was to the series. I would often try to understand my interest in the series, and it wasn't until the fourth book that I realized it was Becky Bloomwood's relatability that drew me to the series.

I can't even count the times I have let my imagination wander to such a childish place that I would be incredibly embarrassed if anyone found out. Well, Becky Bloomwood befriends you in this very secret place. She is hilarious at the conclusions she jumps to as she blows nearly every situation out of proportion through feeding her imagination with the most exceptional and unlikely ideas. Sophia Kinsella has created a character that I can relate to on this level through very exaggerated and entertaining events that make my childish fantasies seem, well...a little ridiculous, but also more common than I'd imagined. Suddenly, I find more humor in my fantasies than before.

Then there is the shopping...the excuses and justifications that Becky makes for each purchase is highly entertaining simply because every girl has made a similar silent excuse or justification at some point in her life for some extravagant, or not-so-extravagant, purchase. In fact, I chuckled at myself the other day when I found myself mimicking a phrase that Becky Bloomwood uses so frequently in the series while wearing a purple patent leather pair of shoes I purchased over a year ago "I knew they'd be a good investment."

I recommend the book series for any girl who has ever had childish fantasies or justified a purchase to herself. Though it will never be considered a classic, it is a well-written, highly entertaining series.

There are five books to the series and the last is better than the first. The books in order are:

Confessions of a Shopaholic
Shopaholic Takes Manhattan
Shopaholic Ties the Knot
Shopaholic and Sister
Shopaholic and Baby

Happy reading!

Riku

This is (neigh...was) my dog Riku.

Cute Right?

This is how Riku looks now.

Still cute (well I think so anyway) right?

Just wait...

I wanted to write a little post about my dog Riku, not because he's my baby and certainly NOT because I think he's the most incredible dog ever; trust me I have no blind love when it comes to Riku. I have a sort of love/hate relationship with him. I love him and consider him part of the family, but most of the time I would very much like to strangle him!

I realize many people idolize their dogs. THAT IS NOT ME. I do think Riku is a bit special though (in more ways than one - if you know what I mean), almost human-like. Let me explain...

We got Riku as a puppy four years ago, and he has been a tripp ever since. He was one of the last two puppies left and was the tallest. He was a skinny little thing with giant paws and was hilarious to watch run, it was a bit like watching a colt learn to walk, all legs that were disproportionate to his body. I remember going to visit him a few times before taking him home- he was the most vocal, and certainly the most interesting, of the entire litter. He captured our hearts immediately. He had such personality and was so clever! We soon discovered, however, that he had a lot more personality than we bargained for. I guess you could say he's our Marley (though not as destructive).

Riku is a hunting dog, so he's bread for water and the outdoors, which is ironic when I tell you what I'm about to tell you. One day, we discovered, while walking our 10 week-old puppy, his aversion to water. Yes, that's right...water! Walking him along the sidewalk shortly after it rained, you know when it leaves patches of dry and wet cement that run together, Riku stopped every time, REFUSING to budge whenever he got to a spot of wet cement. Seriously! He would not move an inch, even with all the tugging and pulling on him...all 10 pounds of him! This made my husband a bit concerned, as it was the intention that Riku would some day retrieve birds from the water. It took Riku TWO years to learn to enjoy swimming, but he still, even today, REFUSES to walk on wet pavement. After it has rained and I go to let him out the back door, as soon as he sees the wet step he halts. I actually have to push him out the door.

But wait! There's more...

There are the many times when he rolls on his back submitting to, not only all people he meets, but dogs as well, even the five pounders. Now mind you, Riku is over 70 pounds and is considered tall for his breed. Then there are the times when you go to pet him and he's not exactly sure what to do so begins to spin and then nibble you until you say "NO" and then begins to nibble himself. Or how 'bout when he jumps our baby gate (that we keep him in until his feet are dry when he comes in from outside) every time toast pops up out of the toaster. And then there are always the moments when he greets you at the door running circles on your feet before he plops over (on your feet) onto his back as if he is doing some break dance move writhing about until you scratch his belly. Also, it might be worth mentioning, that he only likes the bite-size toys. I got him a baby toy once (which he still has) that is a tiny plush animal that plays twinkle little star. He carries it everywhere! And then when the toy begins to play twinkle little star, he sings along. He howls every time a siren goes by or a tornado drill goes off. And although he is an immaculate hunter, he's still not sure what to think about having birds in his mouth, he sort of turns them over as if he's disgusted of all things! I mean...he is a bird dog. He barks at tree stumps and squats to pee. He knows when we're leaving before we even get our coats on or grab our keys and actually puts himself in the basement. He plays with centipedes in the bath tub, and after the legs are scattered all over the bathtub, he picks it up in his mouth and savors it. Seriously!

These are just a few of Riku's many oddities. The most recent, however, which has actually provoked this post, is that I have discovered Riku is an escape artist! It all began when he started jumping the baby gate we put up at the back door to keep him kenneled while we were gone. We then discovered we could keep him gated if we put another gate over the top...well...at least until he discovered how to knock it down. We then decided we would start putting the dogs (yes, we have two) down in the basement while we were at work. Every once in awhile we would come home and he would greet us at the front door. We discovered that if we did NOT make sure the door was latched he could push his way out. We were very conscientious of this here on out. Then...two weeks ago we went on vacation and my cousin Keely stayed with the dogs. When we got home they were both at the door to greet us. We just assumed Keely forgot to make sure the basement door was latched...well you know what they say about assuming (ass-u-me). We shortly discovered that Riku had learned to actually TURN the door knob at let himself out. I know right! So on Sunday we decided we were going to nip this in the bud. We bought a baby door knob to prevent him from turning the knob and a chain lock. Nick installed both and when I got home from work the next day there was no baby knob, and although Riku was still in the basement, the door was open as far as the chain would allow it. There were scratch marks all over the door frame with paw prints going up it about four feet high. Paint chips scattered the floor. Now, I was a bit angry, but more so in awe. He likes the basement! He goes down there on his own. His blankets and toys are down there. WHY THEN DOES HE KEEP ESCAPING? Because he can. That's why.

This post got a little longer than I hoped, but I wanted to give you a little insight about my very strange dog. Our other dog has no weird nuances, and is of the same breed. What gives?

If you have any interesting stories about your dog - do share.

Robin Hood

So sorry I lied...I know I mentioned that I would be posting my first review soon and here I am more than a week later.

I'm already half-way through the second season and its only been three days since I started. The BBC series Robin Hood is highly addictive. I spent half of my day Saturday and all of my day Sunday watching episode after episode of ruggedly handsome English men, who could be bad but choose to be good, fight at least one other ruggedly handsome man, who could be good but chooses to be bad. There's action, adventure, love, betrayal, friendship, war, and comedy. This show has a little bit of everything...and is family friendly!

Granted the fight scenes are a bit corny and the picture is sometimes a little rough, but I highly recommend this show. There's comic relief where you least expect and the wardrobes are mid-century with a bit of modern flare. Check out the show's website here and check out some of the seriously handsome men below.

Robin Hood is played by British actor Jonas Armstrong and couldn't be cuter. Seriously!

Sir Guy of Gisborne, the Sheriff's evil side-kick, is played by sexy British actor Richard Armitage whom I first fell in love with on the BBC short series North and South.

Two of Robin Hood's Men are also worth taking a glance at.

Joe Armstrong plays Alan A Dale (no relation to Jonas Armstrong; I already checked).

And...Harry Lloyd plays Will Stutley (or should we say Studly).

Of course we can't forget about the leading lady who is as equally easy on the eyes as the men. Lucy Griffiths plays Lady Marian. She captures the hearts of both good and evil. Watch and see.

I highly suggest you check this show out. There is unfortunately only three seasons. I was able to access the first two seasons on my Netflix watch instant and am hoping I will be able to watch the third season either on the show's Web site or on hulu. Be careful visiting the site, however, I was dismayed to discover a few spoilers.

For you men out there who may think that the only substance to this show is the handsome men, I can assure you that you too will fall in love with this show's cast. I was actually introduced to this series by one of my best friend's (spoils of wear) husband.

Please check it out and let me know what you think!

Second First Post

I realize it has been awhile since I last blogged. I am trying to decide what it is that I want this blog to be because for some reason I think it should be about something particular. I have many fragmented interests and it is hard to decide which to write about. I'd like to find a niche if you will, but perhaps the sole purpose of this blog is just to be a garbage blog, a little of everything disposed of onto this page.

I think, however, I would like to change the direction of this blog ever so slightly. Although I may still write off topic I am most interested in writing reviews about the places I've been, the books I've read, the movies I've seen, and the foods I've eaten, most particularly about locally owned businesses, my own designs included.

...Don't get me wrong, its not that I've been anywhere particularly interesting, but every once in awhile I find the quaintest locally owned restaurant that I feel everyone should know about and because I am always looking for new places to go, interesting things to do, and good books to read I thought I would recommend a few options myself. So perhaps this blog could be one of the arts. A place to share with you my experiences and my passion for design. A place to support local businesses and artists. A place to grow as an artist.

Now, with a little direction I hope to be a bit more loyal to this blog and tap into a childhood passion of writing. Be kind to me as I may be a little rusty, and not as creative as I'd like (I'd like to blame it on the many years of business and college writing I've had to do, nine in all).

I hope to post my first review tomorrow. I know you will be holding your breath till then, but I have to give you something to come back for :)

Sweet Dreams All!

A Year in Review

I suppose you could say 2009 was eventful. I saw a few movies, tried a new gym, took some tennis lessons, went to a play at the Guthrie, ate at some new restaurants, went to some fashion shows, completed three marketing internships, went climbing at Vertical Endeavors in St. Paul, and started a blog. I thought it would be fun, since I now have this blog, to write a few reviews on the new places I've gone, the new things I've tried, and the movies I've seen.

Favorite Movie of 2009: Avatar

I saw quite a few movies this year, but my favorite would probably have to be Avatar. I had the privilege of seeing it in 3D, which was very exciting, I even occasionally caught my hand coming up to swat virtual bugs that I thought were swarming my face. Avatar was beautiful to watch and has a little something for everyone.

Least Favorite Movie of 2009: Ghosts of Girlfriends Past

Although I like both Jennifer Gardner and Matthew McConaughey I felt this was a terrible plot, and just not very entertaining at all.

Favorite Restaurant of the Year: Saigon in St. Paul

A personal favorite of mine for the last 9 years, Saigon is a little hole-in-the-wall Vietnamese restaurant that has the best Pho (beef broth and rice noodle soup) that I've ever had. They have reasonable prices and fresh entrees. One of my favorites is the chicken spring rolls.

New Restaurant of the Year: Ngon in St. Paul

For my birthday dinner Nick took me to Ngon in St. Paul. It is primarily Vietnamese cuisine with a fusion of, I believe, French. Located on University Avenue I was quite surprised when I walked in to find a restaurant very typical of an uptown Minneapolis ambience. It was very trendy. Though the food was good, I much prefer Saigon, which has better food and cheaper prices. I am excited, however, to go back and try their brunch.

The Guthrie: A Christmas Carol

After dinner at Ngon Nick took me to see "A Christmas Carol" at the Guthrie, which was quite good. The Guthrie architecture and design elements reminded a lot of the Walker Museum in Minneapolis. Clean lines, minimalistic, and great design elements. My only negative is that once in the Guthrie Nick and I had the hardest time actually finding the auditorium. We went up the longest escalator ever (after asking how to get to the 5th floor) and once off had to ask several employees how to get to the auditorium (others were even asking us how to get to the auditorium). More signage would definitely be helpful.

Vertical Endeavors:

For my birthday spent with my girlfriends I really wanted to try out Vertical Endeavors in St. Paul, an indoor climbing facility. At $20 for the whole day you had access to multiple climbing walls and could come and go as you please. Unfortunately, unless you have past experience belaying you are very limited to the climbing space as a majority of the ropes are designated for belaying, leaving only 5-7 automatic ropes in the whole facility. Therefore, for part of the day we spent our time crowding around the limited available ropes waiting in line, until, fortunate for us, we met another group of climbers who offered to belay us. One other slight negative about the facility is that the walls are shorter than those found at Dicks Sporting Goods and REI (or at least they appear to be). Would I go again? Definitely, but I am excited to try other indoor climbing facilities.

Beware of major camel toe! I say all this because though naive and gullible I am aware that scammers do exist online, thus enters my skepticism. I, however, up until lately have had very good luck when shopping or banking online. Unfortunately, my skepticism faced-off with my gullibility during Christmas shopping this year (or should I say "last year") and my gullibility dominated.

I'm not sure if you remember, but in my "Virtual Christmas Shopping" post I mentioned this Website where I purchased Rosetta Stone Spanish for my husband for an awe shocking low price of $139! For those of you who do not know, Rosetta Stone usually retails for $539, that is a $400 savings! I had never heard of the Website before but because it had a phone number posted, offered online chat for customer support, sent an email confirmation with a contact person once signing up at the site, and used Paypal for its transaction I thought for sure this site is legit, right? Wrong! Though I did receive my Rosetta Stone 3 weeks later (it was being shipped from China), and the box was shrink-wrapped and looked nearly identical to those I'd seen at Borders, I grew increasingly concerned when I realized after viewing the Spanish version at a Borders store my box was missing the black inked word "espanol" on the front and instead had a white label on the side typed "Spanish (LA). I then decided, after no longer being able to access the website, that I had an illegal copy, but continued to hope. I did give my husband Rosetta Stone for Christmas, of which he was elated to receive, but warned that I bought it from a wholesaler in China so was a bit concerned about its authenticity. Unconcerned, since the differences were indecipherable to the untrained eye, he brought it home, opened it up and was ready to begin learning Spanish, but whoa was he when he discovered that the program did NOT come with an activation code. Now, $139 down the toilet and a disappointed husband I warn you of online scams. I have not been able to access the Website for the last month and no one has responded to my inquiries from the website.

Though I have not yet discovered how to truly decipher a legitimate site from a scam, here are a few easy rules of thumb to follow for your future shopping.

1. Do NOT shop on a site that you have not either been referred to or heard of before.
2. If you cannot find reviews on the Web for the site, it may not be legitimate.
3. If its too good to be true, than it probably is TOO good to be true (that one I learned from my husband).

I sincerely hope that no one was scammed this Christmas, but if you have any advice or have been scammed in the past I would love to hear of your experience or any other rules-of-thumb for online shopping.

Best Regards and Happy New Year!

27 Years and Counting

Today I turned 27 years old. That seems so surreal. I don’t feel 27, I’d say I feel more like 24, yeah…that sounds about right. Most people think I look much younger than I am. I’ve even heard some people say I look 12 years old, now that’s just rude if you ask me, but I don’t think they see it that way. To most people being called younger than you are is a compliment, but up until this last year I never considered it as such. But as I get older I am beginning to appreciate it more and more. I realize I’m really not that old, but I am encroaching on 30 which is closer to 40 and further away from 20. I have to say though, I kind of like getting older, I feel as though my insides are finally starting to calm down and I have a little more patience than I did a year ago. Although my birthday was uneventful I rather did enjoy it and I have decided to chronicle it for you.
Because finals are due Monday and Nick worked all day today I spent a good portion of my day writing a paper. In order to concentrate and truly crack down on my paper (there are just way too many distractions at home) I left for Borders Book store around 11 this morning and didn’t leave until 5 PM. I really enjoy writing my papers at Borders, for some reason the hum of people around me, the smell of coffee, and the Christmas music playing in the background is conductive to learning, though the smallest sound can render itself a distraction at home. Anyway, I hunkered down at a table, plugged in my lap top purchased a bottled water and a latte (cinnamon spice to be exact), and began to type away.

A few hours into my paper my adorable cousin Keely stopped by to keep me company, I can always count on her to come visit. She’s my coffee shop buddy, in fact she actually works at a coffee shop. Needless to say she only stayed for a short time, but we were able to get some pictures while she visited.

She made me a birthday cake out of graham crackers and peanut butter. It was so funny when she pulled out a giant container of Jiff right there in the book store.

Keely making me a cake out of Graham crakcers and peanut butter.

Me blowing out my Graham cracker candles.

After the coffee shop I headed home to be picked up by my other cousin Katie (Keely’s sister). She insisted on taking me out to dinner. We wasted about a half hour trying to decide on where to go (that’s actually pretty good, I estimated it at about an hour) and finally decided on the Blue Door Pub in St. Paul. Yummmm! For any of you who have not been there, I strongly recommend it.

We each had a Blue Moon and a Cajun Blucy with sweet potato fries and beer battered fried green beans. Since what we really wanted to see wasn’t playing at the theater, “Blind Side”, we decided on “Everybody’s Fine,” which was actually very sad. You couldn’t help watching it and feeling deep sadness for lonely old people. I believe I made a silent vow that I would never allow my parents to be so lonely, it was heartbreaking. All in all though I would probably only give the movie 2.5 stars. I wouldn’t say it was bad, but it felt as though it was lacking. Robert Dinero was very good, however, extremely convincing. Now that I think about it, all the actors did really well.

That is about the extent of my 27th birthday. Nick and I will be celebrating it December 15. He surprised me with tickets to “A Christmas Carol” at the Guthrie. It only took him seven years for him to get a clue, but better late than never is what I say. Oh, and Nick gave me the greatest card ever! It was all in Spanish (neither one of us reads a lick of Spanish), that's my hubby! Thanks everyone for making my birthday lovely. I really did feel loved!

Living a Day of Thanks

Because Thanksgiving is only two days away I thought I would take a moment to write about what I am most thankful for (I'm already getting teary-eyed just thinking about it).

My Husband

I met my husband nine years ago when I was 17 years old at the meat market where he worked (yes, a real meat market, where you buy steak and other meat stuff). Planning on NEVER getting married, the first thing he said to his coworkers after I left the store was "I'm going to marry that girl someday." And you know what? Two years later (I was 19 and he was 21) he did! For those of you having a difficult time with the math, Nick and I have been married for over 7 years.

Nick and I are complete opposites, so much though that there was a time we were afraid we didn't have enough in common to stay married, but funny how the most important thing we did have in common was what kept us together, our love for each other and our mutual desire to be together. Today Nick and I have become more alike than I ever imagined. Sometimes we'll say exactly what the other was thinking and just smile about it. Now instead of our differences causing a gap our understanding and appreciation of each other is drawing us ever closer to each other.

Why I am thankful for my husband...

Too many reasons to count. He truly is MY person, I believe designed specifically for me to challenge me, love me and make me grow. He is my greatest support, worst critic (yes, I am even thankful for that); he encourages me to be independent and has taught me compassion. My husband is truly one of the most compassionate people I know (I don't think he even knows it though). He can't even watch the news without it effecting him tremendously. He is giving, incredibly smart, and inquisitive. I am thankful that he cooks, cleans, and that he bought me flowers the other day when he went to the grocery store just because. I am thankful that he is honest, that he questions all things, that he is a hard worker, that he loves me and that he will never leave me. Mostly I am thankful because I can honestly say that I am a better person because of him and that he has made my already good life even better.

Thank you baby....I love you!

Family

I have the most amazing family!

My Parents

I know I am a little bias, but I think I have a good looking set of parents! My parents, now living in Indiana (a very long 12 hour road trip from here) are, as far as I'm concerned, the best parents ever! They have been married for almost 28 years and have taught me what married love is. My parents are each others' best friends, rivals, companions, biggest support, and lovers. They are always openly affectionate with eachother (not in a gross way though, well...sometimes gross) and are more in love today then ever.

From my mom I got ambition and a giving heart; from my dad I got wisdom and patience. I'm beginning to cry writing this because I don't even know how to express the gratitude I feel for having such amazing parents. Sometimes I feel bad that I got so lucky.

My parents are two opposites who together make so much sense. My dad's calm demeanor helps still my mom's anxiety; my mom's very young and adventerous spirit keeps my dad (who is 12 years older than my mom) young and active. They are a perfect pairing. My parents have loved me, supported me, encouraged me, watched me grow, and let go when I needed them to. They have truly become my best friends.

My In-Laws (I don't much like that name for them because they are much more, but for lack of a better name this is what I will call them for now)

From left to right: top row: Ryan (brother-in-law), Craig (father-in-law), Nick(husband); bottom row: Maria (sister-in-law), Teresa (mother-in-laws) me, Haley (sister-in-law)

I love this family! Again, I have know idea how I got so lucky.

I remember the day I first met Nick's family, it was October and Haley was only 8, ryan was 18 (and he hadn't met Maria yet). I came over to their house because Nick and I were going on a haunted hay ride nearby. Their kindness and acceptance was incredible...no wonder I married their son!

Mama T and Papa Craig are undoubtedly the best in-laws a girl could ask for. Mama T knows what it is to love. She is a mother in every sense of the word; alwasy caring for her children. She has ALWAYS made me feel loved, has ALWAYS made me feel comfortable and has ALWAYS had my back. I am truly blessed. Papa Craig reminds me a little of my daddy. He is one of the greatest supports I know and full of wisdom. He is kind and compassionate and gives so much of himself never expecting anything in return. I see so much of Papa Craig in Nick, of which I am truly grateful.

Haley is absolutely and totally the most amazing 17 year old I have ever known. She is the top of her class, in Varsity volleyball and soccer, in student council, etc. And to add to it all she is kind, compassionate, and giving. She has wisdom beyond her years and I feel blessed just knowing her.

Ryan and Maria. I have always loved Ryan and am so grateful for his very different views on life. He keeps things real and interesting. I am thankful for his artistic, passionate nature and for his kindness to me. He has even on a few occasions, when needed, had my back, just like a brother would. My newest object of gratitude, however, is Maria, Ryan's very perfect match. Maria is truly an amazing individual. I so admire her differences from mine and love her more for them. She is a strong yet sensitive person who knows how to love and who cherishes family. In my short time knowing Maria she has already taught me so much about life. She too, I can honestly say, has made me a better person. She is the youngest looking 30 year old I have ever seen (I know...can you believe it?) and I have come to truly cherish her advice and wisdoms acknowledging that she speaks from experience. When she talks...I listen.

Friends

Left to right: me, Keely, Katie, Jill

I have the most amazing friends ever! I love you guys!

I have the kind of friends that will last a life-time. They have everything anyone could ever want in a friend. Seriously! They are the most amazing group of girls ever!

Katie:
She is spunky, wild, crazy, intelligent, ambitious, and sensitive. She will always show up when you need help. You need help cleaning your house, she'll happily clean your bathroom. I just don't get it. I would NEVER volunteer to clean someone else's bathroom. But she is truly amazing like that! She'll help you paint, cook , clean-up, etc. She is a great support system. I love you Katie!

Jill (AKA: Spoils of Wear):
She is the greatest listener I know. And I should know because I'm a pretty great talker! Not to mention she is my greatest ego booster and fabulous support. She is also the best shopping partner ever! She posseses great wisdom, of which I admire, and she always surprises me with her knowledge. Jill is the girl I tell everything...I mean EVERYTHING to. I love you Jill!

Keely:
She is my little cousin and my newest lifetime friend. I remember when she used to kind of annoy me and her sister Katie (listed above). Now I can't wait to hang out with her. Keely has grown into a beautiful woman who I can honestly say is by far the sweetest person I know! I'm not even exaggerating on that one! Keely is always kind, she is spontaneous, and she shows up. She is so much fun to be around and to mentor too. I love you Keely!

As you can see I have the utmost to be thankful for. I really have know idea how I got this lucky. I am truly blessed. Thank you everyone for making my life so amazing. I love you all. I hope never to forget to be thankful each day. Thanksgiving is not just one day of the year, but should be everyday of your life. A grateful heart, I'm sure, is the key to happiness.

And finally....

Oufit of the day:

Checkered Twead Jacket: A Christmas present from Mama T
Black Turtle Neck: Thrifted
Plaid Pencil Skirt: Charlotte Russe brand from my mama
Shoes: Charlotte Russe - $6

Oakwood Church Bazaar Follow-up Post

Sorry this is coming so late, but boy oh boy have I been busy. I'd rather not talk about that though. Instead I'd like tell you how the Oakwood Church Bazaar went.

Unfortunately I didn't fair too well, but I did enjoy myself and would definitely do it again. It was NOT all for naught, however. I obtained a few purchases, and even sold a few things. Yeah! I sold my gold big girl tutu to my spunky cousin! I have the pictures to prove it! She wore it for a night out in Stillwater on Saturday. See for yourself.

Here is the front of the tutu worn with leggings, black stiletto boots, a black sweater from Target, and a bracelet I made.

Here is the back of the tutu.

And...here is a close-up of the bracelet I made.

I also sold a red sequined flower bracelet, a black and white silk flower bracelet, the owl bracelet which I love so, a hair clip made of black and white tulle, a purple flower pin, and two little girl flower headbands.
I purchased about as much as I sold though, so much for making some extra Christmas money! Considering that I am pretty much obsessed with the high-end discount retailer, not to mention I have a closet full of the store's wearables, I figured it deserved its own blog. So here it is.

Ode to Target:

When I'm not sure what to wear
nor where to go
I think of you
and your ruby red round symbol

Its funny how you've watched me grow
and fitted me for a many ensemble

For you I am grateful
and know that I will be
forever faithful
for you've seen me through
a many trying times,
of clothes that is,
and decorated my closet
so willingly

I cannot express my gratitude
for all your clearance racks,
small sizes
and fashionable clothing lines

Truly I have found a place
where I can find a simple shirt
to decorate with lace
and while I'm there
I shall not despair
for you also carry...
cloths made of terry

I'm so glad I found you
and know that you will
forever be
respected and adored by me!

Okay, so now that that bit of corn is out of the way I would like to, less dramatically, explain my near obsession with Target. For those of you who do not live in the lovely state of MN it is likely that your store of choice is Wal-Mart, considering that they pretty much rule the world.! But I ask you can you even compare the cute red and khaki to the homely blue hardware aprons typically worn with faded jeans (and not the cute ones either) that the employees where? Or what about Target's advertising campaigns (check out commercial here), how cute, trendy, and original are they compared to...well...Wal-Mart's juvenile smiley face (which I admit is kind of cute), but come on, can't you come up with something different for a change! Then we come to... Super Target has a Starbucks and Diamico and Sons; what does Wal-Mart have...a McDonalds!

These aren't the only reason why I love Target so, however. The shopping ambience, though I'm not sure why, is much more relaxing, inviting, and conducive to shopping and/or browsng than that of Wal-Mart, which often feels Warehousey and cold. At Target I browse; at Wal-Mart I scurry. Finally, I must speak about the fashion-ability of the wearables. A few years back, Target, being the innovator it is, introduced its "Go International" line. A fun, youthful, fashion-forward, and even sometimes classic, junior clothing line. I was sold! It was so cute, mature, girly, punk, funky, fun...you name it! For those of you who have not had the fabulous opportunity to behold the "Go International" line, let me explain.

Every 90 days Target displays a clothing line by a different high-end designer from around the world (now displayed under the designer's name instead of the "Go International" brand), yes you heard me right, high-end designer. Items on display at Target are only a fraction of what you would pay for items from the same designer on the runway, typically with prices points ranging from $100s to $1,000's; while at Target they usually have a price point between $20 and $60. For example, currently Target is carrying a clothing line made exclusively by Target by Anna Sui. Check out this same designer's fall fashion show for her pricier items here. I can also attest for Target's quality of clothing. How many of you have purchased a tank from Old Navy to only have it stretch beyond recognition and loosing its shape with the first wear? Okay, now how many of you have purchased a soft cotton (brushed cotton) top from Express and have it pill with the first wash? I have. Not to say that Target's cotton won't ever shrink, stretch, or fade, but it doesn't with the first wear nor wash, in fact many of my wearables hold up much better than my wearables purchased at more expensive stores. Finally, Target not only provides a great shopping experience, but also provides adorable quality clothing at beyond reasonable prices. One major flaw for the retailer, however, its website could use a complete overhaul. How does such a fashion-forward, trend-setting retailer have such a blah website? Seriously!

So which do you prefer? Target or Wal-Mart?

Outfit of the Day is next!

Because I missed a few posts today you get two outfits, both which are predominantly from Target and both of which were worn on a work day.

Monday
Blue soft cotton cardigan: Target
Blue and white western style button up shirt: Target
Scarf: Target
Brown Chino Pants: Target
Earrings: Target
Shoes: Miss Bisou, Christmas present from my mother-in-law

<img style="display:block; I actually need to leave here in about 15 minutes so I'll make this a short entry (well, short for me anyway). I mentioned in my first post that one of my favorite things to do is create, I would hope that makes me a creative person since that's what I have on my resume, but today you get to be the judge. I made several things for the Bazaar this weekend ranging from a tutu and handbag to woman's and girl's headbands, vintage button magnets, button earrings, funky bracelets, and decoupaged heads (http://spoilsofwear.blogspot.com/2009/10/crafty-day.html). Here are a few pictures for you to enjoy:

This a woman's tutu I made out of gold and black tulle with some pearl beading (no, not real pearls). This tutu is a one size fits most due to the stretchy waistband.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 316px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_067auvI52uk/SvRGAaB-7NI/AAAAAAAAACY/AsxwJgJHllo/s320/tutu+front.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5401018825925651666" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 216px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_067auvI52uk/SvRGAOqGFYI/AAAAAAAAACQ/8wTY1CI37XM/s320/tutu+back.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5401018822872667522" />

This is the handbag I made out of some really beautiful stretch fabric which is lined with a black fabric that is textured like snake skin. There is one pocket and the handle is made out of bangles (yes, bracelets purchased from target actually). The rose is a pin so can be removed should one prefer the bag without it.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 244px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_067auvI52uk/SvRGjo9lWTI/AAAAAAAAACo/d6ROID__Jmc/s320/purse+close-up.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5401019431229151538" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 235px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_067auvI52uk/SvRGjYxcaZI/AAAAAAAAACg/27X76mTizTE/s320/purse.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5401019426883266962" />

These are two of the bracelets I made. Others not pictured include flowers and gemstones. The first bracelet pictured is made out of a smaller elastic and many, many, many rhinestones varying in sizes. The second bracelet pictured I made out of thick elastic and a giant owl pendant I found at the thrift store. My husband thinks it looks like weapon armor.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 283px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_067auvI52uk/SvRHH3NqVJI/AAAAAAAAAC4/La3sQZgqaYY/s320/diamond.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5401020053529973906" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 306px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_067auvI52uk/SvRHHuunmCI/AAAAAAAAACw/brIwDl6y77o/s320/owl.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5401020051252287522" />

These are two of the woman's headbands I made. The first made with feathers and a vintage button (actually purchased from an antique store in Bayfield, Wisconsin), and the second made just with feathers.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 246px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_067auvI52uk/SvRIF0dHVZI/AAAAAAAAADI/wp0-YVWDc8s/s320/Headband+1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5401021117941372306" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 246px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_067auvI52uk/SvRIFYgNBHI/AAAAAAAAADA/R1jIf-LL3Uw/s320/Headband+2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5401021110438134898" />

And finally, the outfit of the day. This was not a work day, so I am in my casual everyday attire. The jacket was a Christmas present from my husband a few years ago and is Empyre, it also has skulls on the back. The scarf and jeans are thrifted. I just bought those jeans for $9.99 at the thrift store and am obsessed. They are rerock (which I've never heard of before, but apparently they retail for $90.00+). And the boots, another great find, are UGG, which I actually purchased at TJ Maxx for 20% of the original price (that is about 80% off Yo!).

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 275px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_067auvI52uk/SvRI6dZggvI/AAAAAAAAADo/j4m0GAguM6Q/s320/pocket.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5401022022285296370" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 275px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_067auvI52uk/SvRI6JB6QwI/AAAAAAAAADg/iVmoRuG5ak0/s320/ugg+boots.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5401022016817611522" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 275px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_067auvI52uk/SvRI5nNS6pI/AAAAAAAAADY/IfggH7rqDhE/s320/scarf.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5401022007738559122" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 172px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_067auvI52uk/SvRI5cGW5rI/AAAAAAAAADQ/Ks7xxHf_Rfc/s320/Elaina+ugg.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5401022004756670130" />

Have a great day and hope to see you all at the Oakwood Church Bazaar today or tomorrow! Now...don't get me wrong, I absolutely love Christmas, not to mention Christmas music, but I can only focus on one holiday at a time. What about Thanksgiving? It seems as though we skipped right over that one. Anyway, this shopping experience was just a gentle (or screaming) reminder about all the Christmas shopping I had yet to do. I do love to buy gifts, oh how I do, in fact I often go a little overboard and feel the effect afterwards through depleted bank accounts, but I am a very busy girl and don't have much time for shopping (yes I said it, I don't have much time for shopping).

Typically I start planning on what I'm going to buy for my husband in August because I usually need to start saving by then (I don't own a credit card, it appears I have a bit of a healthy fear of them). Unfortunately however, this August I was still without a clue on what to buy for Nick (my husband) and because I am a full-time student, working part-time and doing an internship I have very little time or money to spare. Throughout the year I tried to keep my ears sharp for any hints on what Nick might want for Christmas, but this year I fell short and failed to come up with anything.

Then it happened! Nick started talking excitedly about this Spanish speaking software program called Rosetta Stone (jackpot!). For some reason he has always wanted to learn Spanish, he really likes the culture, people and language, which is very admirable. Needless to say, hip hip hooray! I knew what I was going to get Nick. But whoa was me when I discovered it came with a price tag of $539.00, that is correct, no typo here, that is $539.00. Eeeek! I basically counted that gift out, I was nowhere near prepared for that type of price tag. Bummer. Then one night out of boredom I decided to google Rosetta Stone and came across a DVD website that had Rosetta Stone priced at only...wait for it...$139.00! Can you believe it! So awesome! I mean I could definitely swing that, I already had that much in savings for Christmas anyway. But it gets even better people...FREE SHIPPING and HANDLING! Score! So I of course bought it! Great website by the way, it has lots of deals on all sorts of DVDs and CD Roms. Definitely worth checking out!

Now that Nick was mostly taken care of I could start thinking about the rest of the fam. I started with my sister-in-law Maria simply because I knew she would be the most fun to buy for. I mean she's a 30 year old who loves the color pink and collects Pandas, super fun right? Anyway, I thought it might be fun to get her some wearable pandas so I decided to shop ebay and found panda mittens and a matching hat (below). I haven't made the purchase yet, I thought I would engage all of your opinions first since they both carry a somewhat heavy price tag. Although my sister-in-law is 30 years old she doesn't look a day older than 22. She is very petite and cute, and dresses as young as she looks. So what do you think? Should I make the purchase? The hat is $50 and the mittens are $25.
<img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; I happen to be a very good talker, which most likely may be due to my diagnosis of OCS (Only Child Syndrome), so a blog naturally seemed to be the next step.

I thought it might be fitting that my first blog give a slight intro of myself and the name I have chosen for this blog. As I have already mentioned I am an only child, but one of the few normal ones, per my good friend Jill. I am 26 years old and an MBA student. I have been married to my complete opposite yet perfect match for a little over seven years. I am passionate about my marriage, learning, and creating. I loooovvveee to create many things. I believe it started when I was about 5 years old when I began drawing clothing designs; this desire to create lead to my destroying countless school uniforms and redesigning them to something a little more...well...me! My passion for fashion, as it were, has since evolved into the creation of handbags, tutus, headbands, Christmas ornaments, magnets, earrings, bracelets, etc. It couldn't be more fun! My Daddy actually very recently made me a sewing room in my very quaint little attic for all my little crafts (No dogs aloud! Husbands on invite only!). Pictures of my sewing room can be found here http://spoilsofwear.blogspot.com/2009/10/crafty-day.html.I haven't had a lot of time lately to enjoy my new sewing room due to work, school, internships, and volunteer work, but I do get up there every once in awhile. It is truly my very own Oasis.

Since I can't think of a more proper transition, this will have to do. Because there may be many of you who aren't sure how to pronounce my blog name, or even know what it means, I figured it needed its own brief intro. Je` Suis, pronounced JaSwee, is actually French for "I am." I chose this name based off an imaginary business I created for a merchandising class several years ago and it kind of stuck. Je`Suis to me is very profound yet so simple. It actually reminds me of the many wisdoms of my father who is a man of few words. To say "I am" is to say that I am many people, I wear many hats, I enjoy many things; like my fashion I don't always fit into a descriptive box or stereotype. Sometimes I am a complete oxymoron where my beliefs, desires, and values do not always align, but I think that's okay. Needless to say, I believe everyone is an "I am..." and that just makes me all tingly inside.

Finally, I thought it might be fun to try and post a picture of my outfit of the day of each post. So here goes. I guess I forgot to mention that I'm interning at Lawson Software, so today, being a work day, I am in work attire visiting the cafeteria with my Dunn Bros Coffee.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 158px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_067auvI52uk/SvB--vv1CbI/AAAAAAAAAAY/VyvXA3jJY-8/s320/Elaina2%5B1%5D.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5399955569651288498" />

Sweater: Target $12.95
Skirt: Forever 21 $17?
Button Up top: Forever 21 $17?
Shoes: Naughty Monkey given to me by my friend Ann
Black Sparkly tights: Wal-Mart $5
